Compassion in Cosmetics

Proving that beauty is more than skin-deep, two major cosmetics companies, Townley Cosmetics and Smashbox Cosmetics, have joined PETA’s cruelty-free program after signing our statement of assurance promising that they will not conduct animal tests. Please let us tell you a little more about the makeup of each company.

Smashbox Cosmetics: When Dean and Davis Factor, the brothers behind Smashbox Photo Studios—a full-service photography facility that caters to such celebrity photographers as Annie Liebovitz and Herb Ritts—began getting requests from top makeup artists to create a line of professional-grade cosmetics, they complied by creating Smashbox Cosmetics. Dedicated to making their products both high-quality and humane, the brothers have licensed PETA’s new cruelty-free company logo for their products. Says Dean, “It was a personal mission of mine to make all our products cruelty-free. When I first learned that animal testing was a common practice in the cosmetics industry, I was disgusted. I simply could not believe it. From that day forward, I told my staff that all our products needed to be cruelty-free and to only work with manufacturers that do not test on animals. I was extremely excited when that day came six months later, and I am proud to be selling products that are completely cruelty-free.”

Today, their cosmetics are a smashing success and can be seen in a flurry of fashion magazines and on the famous faces of such Hollywood hotties as Drew Barrymore, Carmen Electra, and Charlize Theron. With products that have a “sleek, portable, soft and edgy look,” Smashbox Cosmetics makes it easy for you to put your best face forward too. Available at Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, and Sephora, Smashbox products may also be ordered online here.

Townley Cosmetics: Describing itself as “your one-stop source for the looks you love and innovative ideas that put you on the cutting edge of what’s hot,” Townley specializes in cosmetics for teens and ’tweens. One of Townley’s most popular lines is Stuff by Hilary Duff, the teen actor and pop sensation who was recently crowned “The Power Girl” in a coveted spot on Teen People’s “25 Hottest Stars Under 25” list. Townley’s collection also includes such old-school favorites as ’80s hot properties My Little Pony, Rainbow Brite, and Strawberry Shortcake and today’s trendy Power Puff Girls, Hello Kitty, Earth 2 Jane, That’s So Raven, and much more. Easy to find in any town’s Target, Wal-Mart, Kohl’s, or Mervyn’s, get a full list of Townley’s products and where you can buy them, plus check out a cool interactive “Create Your Own Look” feature and “Beauty Tip of the Month” section here.

Townley Cosmetics and Smashbox Cosmetics join more than 500 companies, including Revlon, Estée Lauder, and Avon, that have sworn off cruel and outdated animal tests and utilize only non-animal methods to ensure that their cosmetics, personal-care products, and household products are safe.

The best way to let companies know that you won’t support animal testing is by using your pocketbook to support Townley, Smashbox, and other companies that refuse to test on animals. Send a clear message that beauty doesn’t have to have an ugly side—join the Animal Savings Club today!
